Kőbánya cellar system

The Kőbánya cellar system is an underground limestone cave network beneath Budapest's district X, spanning numerous kilometers with passages of varying heights and widths. The spaces reflect different periods of excavation and reveal the geological layers that workers exposed over centuries.

Limestone quarrying began in medieval times and shaped Budapest's development as the stone built the city's landmarks. During World War II, the caves were repurposed as a manufacturing facility, changing their role entirely for military purposes.
