Castle of Szigetvár, Medieval fortification in Szigetvár, Hungary
The stone fortress consists of four interconnected sections surrounded by marshlands, featuring defensive walls, bastions, and a central courtyard spanning several acres.
During the 1566 siege, 2,300 Croatian and Hungarian soldiers led by Nikola Zrinski defended against an Ottoman army of 100,000 troops for 33 days.
The fortress represents a symbol of resistance in Hungarian history, commemorated through various artworks, literature, and annual memorial ceremonies at the castle grounds.
Visitors can explore the castle museum, which displays military artifacts, medieval weapons, and architectural elements from different periods of the fortress history.
Both commander Nikola Zrinski and Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent met their deaths during the same siege of this fortress in September 1566.
