Elizabeth of Hungary Bridge, Road bridge over Little Danube in Esztergom, Hungary
The Elizabeth of Hungary Bridge is a road bridge over the Little Danube in Esztergom, spanning about 50 meters and linking two parts of the city on either bank. Both cars and pedestrians use it to cross the river.
A crossing at this spot has existed for a long time because the Little Danube is especially narrow here, making it a natural place to build a bridge. The structure was rebuilt more than once during the 20th century after suffering war damage.
The bridge is named after Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, a 13th-century princess known for caring for the poor and the sick. Esztergom, as a former royal seat, has a close connection to her memory, and her name appears in several places across the city.
The bridge is open at all times and provides a direct crossing between the two banks. Pedestrians should be aware that the walkway can feel narrow when vehicle traffic is heavy.
Although the bridge is short, the channel it crosses divides the city into two clearly separate areas, and without it the route between the two sides would be much longer. This makes a modest crossing play a surprisingly central role in daily movement across the city.
