Vecsembükk Pothole

Vecsembükk Pothole, Natural cave in Bódvaszilas, Hungary

The Vecsembükk Pothole is a cave with multiple vertical shafts descending deep into the limestone formations of the Aggtelek Karst system. The underground passages and chambers reflect the typical structure of karst geology found throughout this region.

Initial exploration of the cave entrance took place in 1969, leading to the discovery of additional passages below ground. These findings significantly contributed to understanding the underground systems of northern Hungary.

The cave serves as a research site for geologists and speleologists studying the formation processes of the karst landscapes in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén region.

Access requires specialized climbing gear and technical skills for descending safely through the vertical sections. Registration with local cave experts is necessary to navigate the complex passages properly.

This pothole system ranks among the deepest known formations on the Alsó-hegy Plateau within the Aggtelek Karst area. Its depth and complexity make it a remarkable example of the extreme erosion processes at work in this landscape.
