Dolný vrch, Limestone plateau in Hidvégardó, Hungary
Dolný vrch is a limestone plateau situated along the Slovakia-Hungary border that stretches across a vast area covered by deciduous forests. The landscape displays numerous karst formations created by the dissolution of the rock over time.
Archaeological discoveries from the Late Bronze Age show that people lived in this region and used caves as shelter during prehistoric times. Artifacts including a bronze axe have been found in two cave systems.
Local people historically relied on the forests and limestone to make charcoal and lime, practices that shaped how they lived and worked on this plateau. Visitors walking through the area can still observe traces of these traditional ways in the landscape.
The plateau can be reached via marked hiking trails that start from nearby villages and are straightforward to follow. The nearest towns with transport connections offer good starting points for exploration.
The plateau contains an extraordinary number of cave systems with varying forms and depths, ranging from narrow vertical shafts to spacious chambers. The deepest of these chasms drops dramatically into the earth.
