Obrovska priepast, Natural chasm in Rožňava District, Slovakia
Obrovska priepast is a natural chasm located in the Rožňava District within limestone rock formations found on a high plateau. The deep opening cuts through geological layers and forms one of the most notable vertical cave openings in the region.
Hungarian cave explorers first descended into this vertical formation in 1959, marking the beginning of its exploration. Mapping efforts continued over the following years to document the system.
The cave system functions as a winter shelter for multiple bat species, including Rhinolophus hipposideros and Myotis myotis populations.
Access to the site is restricted and requires special permission due to its protected status as a natural monument. Visitors should contact the relevant local authorities before planning a visit.
The main shaft has a distinctive bottle-like shape that narrows at different points, with walls covered in mineral formations created by water dripping over time. These crusty deposits form intricate patterns that catch the light in surprising ways.
