Plot 301, New Public Cemetery, Memorial burial plot in New Public Cemetery, Budapest, Hungary
Plot 301 is a memorial section located in the northeastern corner of the cemetery grounds. The area contains several hundred hand-carved wooden posts arranged in straight rows that mark individual graves.
After the 1956 uprising, executed political prisoners were buried here under false names, including Prime Minister Imre Nagy. Artists installed the wooden posts in 1989 to mark and bring public attention to these previously unmarked graves.
The wooden posts serve as memorials for people who died during times of political hardship. Today, visitors can walk among the markers and read the names and symbols carved into each post, reflecting on those being remembered.
The section is located in the northern corner of the cemetery grounds and is accessible from the main pathways. Wear comfortable shoes, as walking across grass and moving between the wooden posts is part of the visit.
The number "301" itself became a symbol of national resistance because it was the only way people could refer to this hidden memorial site for many years. This numerical code allowed visitors to speak about the location without drawing official attention.
