Remete-völgyi Upper Cave

Remete-völgyi Upper Cave is a natural hollow in the Buda Hills carved into white limestone rock. The entrance sits above a creek bed, offering straightforward access to explore its passages.

The cave was first excavated in 1914, revealing evidence of human habitation in prehistory. Later investigations confirmed its role as a dwelling place during ancient times.

The cave served multiple purposes throughout history, from Stone Age dwelling to a hiding place for valuable possessions and counterfeiting operations.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight, as the interior is dark and passages can be challenging. The approach is steep and becomes slippery after rain, so move carefully through the area.

The cave displays distinct layers of water erosion that reveal how the limestone was gradually hollowed out over time. These geological marks tell the story of the site's slow transformation by flowing water.
