Remete-hegyi No 2 Cave, Limestone cave in Remeteszőlős, Hungary.
Remete-hegyi No 2 Cave is a limestone cave in the Buda Hills extending about 44 meters long with a depth reaching about 15 meters. The entrance sits roughly 10 meters above the creek bed within the white limestone hillside.
Excavations in the cave began in 1914 under Ottokár Kadić, who was later joined by László Vértess in further research. Their work uncovered evidence of human settlement dating back to the Stone Age.
The cave's name comes from a hermit who sought shelter here after the Hungarian Pauline Order was dissolved. Over the centuries, the place served as a refuge for those seeking solitude away from the world.
You can reach the cave entrance by following marked trails from the Szirom Street or Zsíroshegyi Street bus stops. The paths are well-marked and the site is accessible to those with basic hiking ability.
The cave bears clear traces of ancient water flow patterns that once connected directly to the creek bed below. These water-carved features tell the story of geological changes over thousands of years.
