Croghan Hill

Croghan Hill is an extinct volcano in County Offaly that rises 234 meters above the Bog of Allen. The hill is surrounded by moorland and offers views across the Irish Midlands region.

The summit features a Bronze Age burial mound, and in the 5th century Bishop MacCaille established his church on the hill. These early religious structures demonstrate the location's long-standing importance in Irish history.

The hill holds a connection to Saint Bridget, a patron saint of Ireland, who according to local tradition was born near its base. This association shapes the local identity and draws visitors interested in Irish saints and their stories.

A marked trail of about 1.8 kilometers circles the hill, with the Croghan Community Centre serving as the starting point for walks. The path is relatively easy to follow and gives a good overview of the surroundings.

This elevation is the only extinct volcanic formation in the otherwise flat landscape of the Bog of Allen. It creates a striking geographical contrast in the central Irish region.
