Croghan Hill, Extinct volcano in County Offaly, Ireland
Croghan Hill rises 234 meters from the expansive Bog of Allen, offering views across multiple counties in the Irish Midlands region.
The summit features a Bronze Age burial mound, and Bishop MacCaille established his church on the hill during the fifth century alongside Saint Patrick.
The location holds connections to Saint Bridget, a patron saint of Ireland, who according to local accounts was born near the base of the hill.
A marked 1.8-kilometer trail circles the hill, with the Croghan Community Centre serving as the starting point for hiking expeditions.
The geological formation stands as the only extinct volcano in the Bog of Allen, transforming the otherwise flat landscape of central Ireland.
