Kinnitty Castle, Gothic revival castle in Kinnitty, Ireland
Kinnitty Castle is a Gothic revival castle situated on 650 acres of parkland with 60 acres of rolling lawns near the Slieve Bloom Mountains. It now functions as a four-star hotel containing 37 bedrooms, each with high ceilings and cast iron roll top baths.
The original castle was built in 1209, destroyed by Normans in 1213, and later rebuilt through several reconstructions. The current structure was designed by architect James Pain in the Tudor style.
The castle contains several rooms including the Library Bar and Sli Dala Restaurant, where visitors can enjoy traditional Irish cuisine made with local ingredients. These spaces show how the estate shares the region's heritage with its guests.
The estate can be reached from the R421 regional road and offers visitors broad paths through the parkland and across the lawns. Wearing comfortable shoes is wise for exploring the grounds properly.
On the grounds of St Finnian's church stands an Egyptian-style mausoleum holding the remains of Captain Richard Bernard, a former resident of the castle. This unexpected architectural detail reveals the personal history of someone closely tied to the estate.
