Clontuskert Priory, Medieval priory in County Galway, Ireland
Clontuskert Priory is a medieval monastic complex in County Galway featuring Gothic architecture and ornate stone details. The western entrance displays carved figures of religious significance, including the Archangel Michael and saints, which remain largely intact despite the passage of time.
The O'Kelly family founded this site in 1140 for the Arrouaise Order, a monastic community originating from France. A major fire in 1404 devastated the interior, destroying manuscripts and religious objects, though the buildings were eventually restored.
The site reflects the monastic life that once unfolded within its walls, where the Arrouaise community maintained daily rhythms of prayer and work. Visitors can sense how religious practice shaped the space and the people who inhabited it.
The ruins sit in a rural setting south of Ballinasloe and can be reached via local roads without difficulty. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven and there are no paved paths within the site.
A devastating fire in 1404 consumed all the manuscripts, books, and precious objects stored within the priory. The people who helped rebuild the site received special papal indulgences as a reward for their efforts.
