Victoria Lock, canal lock in Clonahenoge, County Offaly, Ireland
Victoria Lock is a waterway lock on the River Shannon between Meelick and Clonahenoge, serving as the first lock upstream from Lough Derg. Stone walls and heavy gates allow boats to move between different water levels as they travel along this section of the river.
The lock was designed in the 1840s by Thomas Rhodes and replaced an older lock and canal system in this area. It formed part of a broader effort to improve navigation along the Shannon during that decade.
The lock is accessible by foot from nearby paths and offers good views across the Shannon. Visit during dry weather when the surrounding ground is firm and safe to walk on.
Cast-iron bollards from 1844 made by Fenton, Murray and Jackson Engineers of Leeds still stand at the lock. These rare original pieces show the industrial craftsmanship of the era when the lock was built.
