Balbriggan, Coastal town in County Dublin, Ireland
Balbriggan is a coastal town in County Dublin that spreads along the Irish Sea with a harbor and limestone pier. The River Bracken flows through the area and shapes the structure of this northern settlement.
Baron Hamilton purchased estates here in the early 1700s and built a limestone pier that transformed the place. What was once a small fishing village became a manufacturing center that grew over the following centuries.
The name comes from the Irish Baile Brigín, possibly referring to Brecan's place or the small hills nearby. You can still see how the town developed along the coast in a way that reflects this early connection to the landscape.
The town sits on the Belfast-Dublin railway line and is easy to reach by train, bus, or car. A waterfront walk on dry days is pleasant for seeing the harbor and getting a feel for the local pace.
Archaeological digs near Hamlet Lane found a Neolithic house and stone tools over 5000 years old. These discoveries show that people lived in this area far longer than recorded town history suggests.
