Ardgillan Castle, Country estate with castle in Balbriggan, Ireland
Ardgillan Castle is a country house estate with a main section built in 1738 and later wings added in the late 1800s. The 194 acres of grounds include parkland, woodlands, and gardens, with views toward the Irish Sea and the Mourne Mountains to the north.
The core of the estate, originally called Prospect House, was built in 1738 for the Taylor family. Over generations it was expanded with additional sections that shaped its current form.
The main hall displays 17th century Down Survey maps that record how Ireland was charted and divided after major political upheaval. These maps show the practical work of surveyors who traveled the country to document its lands.
The house is open daily throughout the year, with extended hours during summer months. Parking is available at no charge, and visitors can join guided tours or visit the café.
The Alcove Wall in the garden was built during the 1840s famine as a relief work program created by the Taylor family. The structure provided employment and was designed to shelter fruit trees during harsh seasons.
