Dorinish, Private island in Clew Bay, County Mayo, Ireland.
Dorinish is a small, uninhabited island sitting in Clew Bay, off the west coast of County Mayo in Ireland. The island is covered mostly in natural grassland, has a freshwater spring, and can only be reached by boat from the mainland.
John Lennon bought the island in 1967 and later allowed a group of people to live there and try to farm the land. The group stayed for around five years before leaving, after which the island returned to its natural state.
The island is best known locally for its connection to John Lennon, and this draws curious visitors who come simply to stand on the same ground. There are no signs or markers on the island itself, so the experience is more about the landscape than any visible tribute.
The island has no facilities, so any visit requires advance planning for boat transport, as there is no regular ferry service. Weather and tides in Clew Bay can change quickly, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out.
Lennon himself rarely visited the island and reportedly spoke of giving it to Yoko Ono as a wedding gift, though no formal transfer ever took place. After his death, the island was sold and has remained in private hands ever since.
