Valentia Island, Atlantic island in County Kerry, Ireland
Valentia Island extends 11 kilometers in length and 3 kilometers in width, featuring coastal cliffs, mountains, and subtropical gardens along the Iveragh Peninsula.
The island marked a milestone in global communications as the eastern terminus of the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable connection between Europe and North America in 1866.
The Heritage Centre in Knightstown presents exhibitions about marine life, local traditions, and the evolution of island communities through artifacts and photographs.
Visitors can access the island through the Maurice O'Neill Memorial Bridge at Portmagee or by taking a car ferry service from Reenard Point between April and October.
The Tetrapod Trackway contains 385-million-year-old footprints from early vertebrates, representing some of the oldest evidence of four-legged animals walking on land.
