St. Dominic's Abbey, Dominican monastery ruins in Cashel, Ireland
The medieval stone structure features a high tower above the crossing point and contains one aisle and transept within its cruciform layout.
Archbishop David McKelly established the monastery in 1243, bringing Dominican friars from Cork to form the initial religious community at this location.
The Irish Dominican Presidency conducted provincial gatherings at the monastery in 1256, 1289, and 1307, marking its status within the religious order.
Visitors can obtain access keys from a neighboring house to explore the enclosed monastery ruins during their visit to Cashel.
The monastery experienced a substantial reconstruction in 1480 under Archbishop John Cantwell following a fire that damaged the original structure.
