Castle Hackett, Medieval tower house at Knockma Hill base in County Galway, Ireland.
Castle Hackett is a stone tower house with four corner towers and rectangular layout standing near Lough Corrib in County Galway. The structure includes a vaulted basement level and displays the compact defensive design typical of medieval fortified residences.
Norman settlers from the Hackett family built this fortification in the 13th century. The Kirwan family took over the residence during the 15th century.
William Butler Yeats included references to the Hacketts and their castle in his collection of Irish folk tales about the fairy king Finvarra.
The ruins can be viewed from the path leading toward the forest trail around Knockma Hill. The surrounding area is accessible and offers views across the landscape toward Lough Corrib.
The Kirwan family later abandoned the original tower house to build a three-story manor on the property. That manor house was destroyed by fire in 1923 during the Irish Civil War.
