Kilmacduagh monastery, Abbey and national monument near Gort, Ireland

The Kilmacduagh complex includes multiple medieval structures, a cathedral, and a round tower situated on elevated ground between County Galway and County Clare.

Saint Colman founded this religious center in the 7th century on land granted by his cousin King Guaire Aidne mac Colmáin of Connacht.

The O'Heyne and O'Shaughnessy families maintained substantial influence over the monastery, managing its lands and preserving Saint Colman's sacred relics.

Visitors can access the site throughout the year without an entrance fee, and keys to locked buildings are available from a nearby residence.

The round tower, measuring 34.4 meters, stands as Ireland's tallest pre-modern construction and displays a noticeable tilt due to its foundation.
