Barntown Castle, castle in County Wexford, Ireland
Barntown Castle is a five-story stone structure with a square base located in County Wexford, standing between Forth Mountain and the River Slaney. Its thick walls offer views of the river and surrounding landscape.
The castle was likely built in the 15th or 16th century by the Roche family, with the first recorded mention of Walter Roche in 1562. After his death, it passed to William Wadding and fell into disrepair around the time of the 1641 rebellion.
The castle belonged to the Roche family, who were wealthy and influential in the region. Their several castles nearby show how such families displayed their power and ownership through stone structures.
The site is not set up for guided tours, but you can walk around the exterior and view the ruins from various angles. Access is via a small side road south of New Ross off the N25, with plenty of parking space nearby.
The castle originally had arrow slits and a blocked window on the north side that are still visible under the ivy. A small machicolation above the east entrance provided defenders with extra protection against attackers approaching from below.
