Maghera, Mountain summit in County Clare, Ireland.

Maghera is a mountain summit in County Clare that rises to about 400 meters elevation. A paved road leads directly to the top, where a broadcasting transmitter station stands among the rolling countryside.

The first television transmitter here went on air in February 1963 and was fully operational on 10 September 1963, one of Telefís Éireann's five original main transmitters alongside Mullaghanish, Kippure, Truskmore and Mount Leinster. RTÉ Radio FM began broadcasting from the site in 1966. The original 147.5-metre mast of 1962 was replaced in 2011 by a 160-metre cable-stayed steel lattice mast ahead of digital terrestrial television; analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012.

The hill is known in Irish as Cnoc an Ois, and the site is at Killanena in east County Clare. Its landmark is the 160-metre cable-stayed steel lattice mast erected in 2011, which replaced the original 147.5-metre mast put up in 1962. The mast is the feature visitors notice from the surrounding countryside.

The mountain is easily reached by a paved road that goes directly to the summit. The straightforward access makes it a good choice for visitors who want views without strenuous hiking.

The summit's 160-metre cable-stayed steel lattice mast, erected in 2011, replaced a 147.5-metre mast from 1962. Until 1999, summer atmospheric conditions could carry interference from a Spanish transmitter on Channel B, so viewers in south-west Ireland occasionally saw bullfights instead of the scheduled programme.
