Curraghchase Forest Park, Protected forest park in Kilcornan, Ireland.
Curraghchase Forest Park is a protected forest area in Kilcornan that spans 313 hectares of mixed woodland, lakes, and walking trails. The grounds also feature an arboretum with trees and shrubs from different regions worldwide and contain three ancient ring forts scattered throughout the park.
The land was owned by the noble families Hunt and de Vere from the 1600s until 1957. A fire that destroyed the main house led the state to acquire the property and convert it into a public park.
The park emerged from a tragic fire that cleared the land for public access and now protects rare bat species that visitors may glimpse during evening walks. This transformation has given the location special meaning for those interested in wildlife conservation alongside outdoor recreation.
The park offers six marked walking trails with varying lengths suited to different fitness levels. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and check seasonal hours, as opening times change between summer and winter months.
The park serves as a protected habitat for the Lesser Horseshoe Bat, a rare species that roosts in caves and tree canopies throughout the grounds. This bat species is endangered across Europe, making this location crucial for conservation efforts.
