Bunratty Castle

Bunratty Castle is a medieval stone fortress with four levels of chambers, halls, and living quarters connected by spiral staircases. Thick defensive walls and the internal layout provide a clear sense of how the structure was organized and used for both daily life and defense.

The current structure was built in 1425 by the MacNamara clan, but the site had a longer history with three previous castles dating back to Viking times. This succession shows how strategically important this location was over centuries for controlling the region.

The furnished rooms display tapestries, paintings, and furniture that show how Irish nobles lived and worked. Visitors can walk through spaces decorated with period pieces that reveal the daily habits and tastes of the aristocracy.

The castle sits near Shannon International Airport and is accessible for day visits. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as exploring all levels requires climbing multiple flights of stairs.

The Great Hall contains a collection of medieval weapons including longbows, battleaxes, and carved wooden shields bearing family crests. These pieces offer insight into the fighting methods and heraldic traditions of the period.
