Sean's Bar, Irish pub in Athlone, Ireland.
Sean's Bar is a pub on the River Shannon in Athlone, considered one of the oldest continuously operating taverns in Ireland. Wattle and wicker walls give the room an unusual texture, along with dark wood and small windows.
The place began around 900 as a tavern near a ford across the Shannon, where travelers crossed the river. Over more than a millennium the function as a resting stop endured, despite changing owners and structural alterations.
The name comes from Sean Fitzsimons, who ran the place in the 20th century and carried on centuries of hospitality. Visitors notice old coins displayed in cases along the walls, unearthed during renovation work and now part of the room itself.
The entrance sits on Main Street in central Athlone, a few steps from the riverbank and easy to reach on foot. Inside you find low ceilings and narrow passages that preserve the character but make the space difficult for wheelchair users.
Archaeologists found wall remains from the ninth century beneath the floor in 1970, along with medieval coins now held at the National Museum of Ireland. The original wattle walls of willow and clay stayed visible in several places and form part of the interior today.
