Monellan Castle, Former castle estate in County Donegal, Ireland
Monellan Castle was a large mansion with 35 rooms, including underground sections, located near Donaghmore. The estate was surrounded by a protective wall that enclosed the entire grounds.
The Delap family acquired the estate in the late 1700s when Robert Delap married Mary Anne Bogle and inherited the property. The building remained under their ownership for generations as a major local holding.
Local stonemasons from nearby parishes built the castle, working under Scottish direction and bringing their traditional craftsmanship to the site. This collaboration between Irish workers and Scottish supervisors shaped how the structure was designed and constructed.
The grounds once included tennis courts, a bowling green, and flower gardens that reflected the lifestyle of its former residents. Today the site is mainly of historical interest, as little remains of the original building.
The Irish Land Commission ordered demolition in the 1930s, and its stones were repurposed for road construction in 1945. This reflected a broader effort to redistribute land and reduce large estates across the region.
