Mountshannon House, Neo-Palladian country house in Lisnagry, County Limerick, Ireland
Mountshannon House is a Neo-Palladian country house in Lisnagry, County Limerick, distinguished by a striking seven-bay front with four Ionic columns. The building contained numerous windows distributed across its elevation, allowing light to fill the interior spaces throughout the day.
The house was built in the mid-18th century as the residence of John FitzGibbon, the first Earl of Clare and Lord Chancellor of Ireland. Its construction reflected the wealth and political power of the Anglo-Irish gentry during that period.
The house served as the family seat of the FitzGibbons and functioned as a social center for the region. The estate required extensive staff to maintain its grounds and host gatherings that brought local gentry together.
The estate spreads across about 900 acres along the road between Limerick and Castleconnell, with river boundaries on two sides. Visitors should allow time to explore the full extent of the grounds and appreciate how the building relates to its landscape.
The entrance hall was so generously proportioned that a horse-drawn carriage could pass directly through the building. This unusual design choice reveals how much the owners valued grand scale and impressive display.
