Hunt Museum, Art museum in Limerick, Ireland.
The Hunt Museum displays about 2,000 original works ranging from Neolithic artifacts to 20th-century art in a Palladian-style building on Rutland Street. The collection spans archaeological finds, paintings, and decorative objects from many periods.
John and Gertrude Hunt assembled their collection of artworks and archaeological objects over many decades before making it publicly available in 1978. The couple selected the 18th-century building, once used as a custom house, as a permanent home for their treasures.
The collection brings together works by Picasso, Renoir, and Irish artist Jack B Yeats alongside Egyptian artifacts and medieval objects. These pieces reflect different cultures and artistic traditions that coexist within this space.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, with Mondays closed. Visitors should allow time for a comfortable tour of the collection and can easily locate the building on central Rutland Street.
Each object in the collection received a personal catalog number from John Hunt, who marked items with small paper labels using his fountain pen. These handwritten numbers show how directly and personally he cared for his collection.
