The Living Bridge, Pedestrian bridge at University of Limerick, Ireland.
The Living Bridge is a pedestrian structure at the University of Limerick that spans about 350 meters across the River Shannon, linking five separate segments together. The structure curves through natural wooded islands in the river and rests on two underslung support cables.
The structure was designed by Eiffel Constructions Metalliques and opened in 2007, connecting the two sides of the river. It was built as a key project to link the university's different locations more effectively.
The bridge includes sheltered spots with glass panels and wooden benches where people pause to watch the river and surroundings. These quiet corners offer moments to take in the landscape and nature around you.
The bridge features subtle lighting throughout its curved path, providing safe passage during daylight and evening hours. The design makes it straightforward to navigate, with good orientation for pedestrians moving in either direction.
The bridge actually winds around natural islands rather than crossing straight over them, preserving the landscape while weaving it into the design. This unusual route makes the walk feel like you are moving through a wooded forest while suspended above water.
