Ashleypark Burial Mound is a Neolithic burial site near Nenagh that ranks among the oldest structures in north Tipperary. The site consists of a central mound surrounded by two low banks with internal ditches that provided structural support.
Radiocarbon dating shows this burial mound was constructed around 3350 BC, making it a key example of Neolithic architecture in Ireland. Excavations uncovered remains of an adult male, two children, and over 300 cattle bones, revealing ancient ceremonial practices.
The name reflects the Ashley family who owned the land for centuries. The site shows how important shared burials and communal feasting were to Neolithic communities.
The site sits within an oak forest with a walking path leading to the mound through the trees. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground can be uneven and muddy, especially during wetter months.
The burial mound lay hidden beneath dense oak trees for over 200 years before being rediscovered in 1980 during land clearing work. This long concealment helped preserve the archaeological remains relatively undisturbed.
