Merlinpark Castle, Medieval tower house in County Galway, Ireland.
Merlinpark Castle is a medieval tower house in County Galway with four corner turrets and a rectangular footprint. Its three floors connect through spiral staircases, and the windows feature ogee arches throughout.
The castle belonged to the Lynch family starting in 1574, but was seized by Cromwell's Commissioners between 1653 and 1655, resulting in the loss of its roof. This period shaped the structure as it appears today.
The name comes from Francis Blake, who renamed the structure in the 1700s after his wife's family. Visitors can sense this personal connection while exploring the grounds.
The outdoor grounds are open for exploration, though the interior remains locked to protect the structure from damage. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven.
On the second floor sits a small carved Sheela na Gig positioned upside down in a window arch. This unusual placement raises questions about its original meaning and purpose.
