Brian Boru's Fort, Ring fort on River Shannon near Killaloe, Ireland
The circular earthen fort measures 70 meters in diameter with banks reaching heights between 4 and 8 meters above ground level.
Built between 500 and 1000 CE, the fort served as a strategic point for monitoring traffic along the River Shannon until its destruction in 1116.
Archaeological excavations in 1961 revealed multiple periods of occupation, with over 800 stone implements found in the surrounding area.
The fort stands one mile north of Killaloe village, offering views across Lough Derg and the River Shannon crossing point.
Michael J. O'Kelly's excavations uncovered evidence of an earlier structure beneath the visible fort, along with Hiberno-Norse pennies from 1035-1070.
