Killaloe Bridge, Road bridge in Killaloe, Ireland
Killaloe Bridge is a road crossing spanning the River Shannon with thirteen stone arches, linking Ballina in County Tipperary to Killaloe in County Clare. The structure consists of solid stone arches that form the main passage across the river.
The present structure was built around 1780 on the site of an earlier bridge from 1650 and underwent significant changes over time. Additional arches were added in 1825, and a lifting mechanism was installed in 1929.
A monument on the bridge honors four members of the Irish Republican Army who died here in 1920. The location holds symbolic importance in the memory of the local community.
The bridge has a single lane controlled by traffic lights that direct vehicles to alternate crossing between both directions. Drivers should expect brief waits when traffic approaches from the opposite direction.
The structure includes a specialized eel management system that assists young eels during their migration toward the Shannon Estuary. This system is an engineering solution that maintains river passage for aquatic life.
