Sutton Castle, Dublin, Victorian Tudor-style mansion in Howth Head, Ireland
Sutton Castle is a four-storey building with red terracotta roof tiles, Art Deco chimneys, and a Gothic porch that rises over terraced levels. The property overlooks Dublin Bay and is now divided into residential apartments.
The structure was built around 1890 as a commission for a local industrialist and replaced an older house on the same site. It was fully restored after a fire in the 1920s and retained its original appearance.
The building takes its name from an earlier house that once occupied the site, and displays characteristic Victorian features with ornate chimneys and landscaped grounds that define the property.
The site is reached through steps and pathways that connect the different terraced levels and lead to the building. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and the steps can be steep.
A major fire destroyed the interior in 1925 while the owners were away in America, yet workers restored everything on-site with great care. The restoration preserved details so carefully that little remained visible of what had been repaired.
