Ben of Howth, Mountain summit in Howth, Ireland
Ben of Howth is a mountain summit that rises 171 meters above Dublin Bay with views stretching toward County Wicklow and the Irish Sea to the east. A communication mast and a trig pillar stand at the peak to mark the highest point.
The summit holds the remains of an ancient burial ground from Celtic times, with a cairn at the peak dating back roughly 2000 years. This marks one of the oldest human structures in the area.
The mountain goes by the Irish name Binn Éadair and draws walkers who come to experience the views and the sense of being above the surrounding bay. People use the paths to reach the summit and enjoy the wider landscape from this vantage point.
Several hiking paths lead to the summit from nearby roads like Windgate Road and Allagour Road. You can choose between different routes depending on your fitness level and how much time you have.
The bedrock contains polymict melange from the Elsinore Formation, a geological composition found nowhere else in Dublin. This rare rock type gives the mountain its own geological character.
