Galilee, Historical region in Northern District, Israel
Galilee is a region in northern Israel that stretches from the Mediterranean coast in the west to the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee in the east. Hills, mountains, open fields and forested areas shape the landscape, while small towns, villages and archaeological sites are scattered throughout the territory.
For thousands of years, this region has been home to Jewish communities, and in the 1st century Jesus of Nazareth walked through it. Later, the area became a center of rabbinic learning where the Mishnah and parts of the Talmud were written down.
Today, Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze live side by side in this region, and you can see their places of worship in many villages and towns. Local markets, religious celebrations and shared holidays shape daily life, and visitors experience this diversity through food, conversation and public spaces.
Winter brings frequent rain and the landscape turns green, while summer months are dry and warm. Traveling through the area, you will find simple accommodations, local restaurants and roads that connect towns, villages and natural sites.
Near the town of Tzippori, you can find an ancient Roman mosaic showing scenes from daily life and mythological figures. Many hikers know the trail through the hills, but few realize that caravans once traveled along this route between coastal cities and the interior.
