Arsuf, human settlement in Israel
Arsuf is a gated residential village perched on Mediterranean cliffs with around 40 families living in large homes built in recent decades. The community includes sports facilities and a botanical garden, but residents must travel to nearby towns for shopping and services.
The site was originally established by Phoenicians as a safe harbor and later controlled by various rulers, including the scene of a famous crusade-era battle. In the twentieth century, Jewish families from Europe bought land nearby and settled there, leading to the modern community being formally organized in the 1990s.
The settlement takes its name from an ancient fortress that once stood nearby, linking residents to centuries of history. Residents organize yearly community gatherings like the Lag BaOmer bonfire that bring families together around shared traditions.
The site is a gated community with private security and no public transportation, so a car is necessary to visit. Nearby Hof-HaSharon Park to the north offers many walking and biking trails through natural areas and coastal hills.
Archaeologists uncovered ancient gold coins at the nearby Apollonia National Park that reveal insights into past trade networks. These discoveries show how important this location was as a major trading port across thousands of years.
