Ponevezh Yeshiva, yeshiva founded in 1908
Ponevezh Yeshiva is one of the world's largest centers for studying Jewish law and teachings, located in Bnei Brak. The building features simple architecture with worn wooden benches, extensive library collections, and handwritten notes from generations of students covering the walls.
The yeshiva was founded in Ponevezh, Lithuania in 1919, but survived the Holocaust and was rebuilt by Rav Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman in Bnei Brak in 1944. This reconstruction marked the beginning of its growth into a worldwide center of Torah study with thousands of graduates over subsequent decades.
The yeshiva carries the name of its original town in Lithuania, preserving the memory of a destroyed community. Walking through the halls, you sense how studying and prayer shape daily life here, and how tradition remains rooted in every corner and practice.
Visitors should understand this is an active learning space with religious practice, where study sessions run from early morning into late night. Respectful behavior and modest clothing are expected, and visiting is best done outside the most intensive study periods.
The yeshiva's library holds hundreds of thousands of Torah books, including rare editions and manuscripts, making it one of the world's largest collections of Jewish scholarship. This collection is accessible to scholars and those interested in Jewish learning, preserving centuries of knowledge.
