National Memorial Hall, Memorial monument at Mount Herzl, Jerusalem, Israel
The National Memorial Hall at Mount Herzl is a memorial structure with a spiral design that holds over 23,000 engraved bricks throughout its interior spaces. Each brick displays a name and death date of a person who died while serving the state.
The memorial opened in 2017 as a dedicated space to honor military personnel who lost their lives in defense of the state. Its spiral design represented a shift toward a new kind of remembrance at this established site.
The space holds names of fallen soldiers that visitors see as part of a shared memory and loss. People come here to acknowledge their sacrifice and connect with others who remember them.
Visitors can explore the memorial by walking along the spiral path and reading the names on the bricks as they move through the space. The interior lighting helps when natural light is dim, so moving slowly allows you to read the inscriptions more clearly.
Each brick inside contains a small LED light that turns on automatically on the anniversary of the person's death. This creates a shifting pattern of illumination that changes daily and highlights each individual person.
