Misliya Cave, Archaeological cave in Mount Carmel, Israel

Misliya Cave is an archaeological site in Mount Carmel with several chambers within limestone formations. Excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts and well-preserved sediment layers that document different phases of human occupation.

Scientific investigation of the cave in 2002 revealed evidence of human activity dating back to the late Pleistocene epoch. The findings show this region was populated long before many other known settlements in the area.

The cave takes its name from a local Bedouin term and sits in a region inhabited by people for thousands of years. Visitors can observe the layered evidence showing how early humans lived and crafted tools at this location.

The cave can be reached via marked paths on Mount Carmel but is not always open to visitors due to ongoing research work. Prior permission and arrangement are necessary to visit the site.

A jawbone found in the cave ranks among the oldest known modern human remains discovered outside Africa. This discovery challenges our understanding of when our species first ventured beyond the continent and how early this region was inhabited.
