Debre Gannet Church, Byzantine Revival church in Jerusalem, Israel.

Debre Gannet Church is a Byzantine Revival structure in Jerusalem with a circular footprint and a dome reaching 30 meters in height. The interior layout uses three concentric rings to organize distinct liturgical spaces where religious services take place.

Construction started in 1882 when Ethiopian Emperor Yohannes IV purchased the land using resources from conflicts with Egypt. This foundation established a major Ethiopian religious presence in Jerusalem.

The church maintains Ethiopian Orthodox traditions through daily rituals and sacred ceremonies. Visitors can observe how the community gathers for liturgical practices that remain central to their spiritual life.

Check local information about visiting times, as services follow the Ethiopian Orthodox calendar and daily prayer schedules. The complex houses a monastic community, so visitors should approach respectfully during their spiritual practices.

During long prayer services, participants hold carved wooden sticks for physical support throughout the ceremonies. This practice reflects the enduring physical discipline that characterizes the extended liturgical traditions observed here.
