Salem, Industrial city in Tamil Nadu, India
Salem is a city in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu located along the Thirumanimutharu River and surrounded by mountains and mineral-rich formations. The municipality covers a wide area with residential neighborhoods, factory grounds and agricultural patches between the hills.
Archaeological finds show the area was connected with Roman traders from the third century BCE and coins from that era came to light. The region later belonged to the Kongu Nadu kingdom before it came under British administration.
The name Salem derives from the Tamil word for peace and connects today with the trade of local textiles and steel goods at the markets across town. Vendors sell mangoes and turmeric from the region while religious festivals regularly bring thousands to the Kottai Mariamman Temple.
The main railway station connects the city with other parts of the country and sits centrally for travelers arriving or moving onward. Local buses run through the town quarters and link residential areas with the business centers and temples on the outskirts.
The local steel production processes iron ore from the nearby Kanchamalai hills and produces specialized sheets exported to other regions. Visitors often notice the yellow mineral patches on the mountain slopes around town that indicate deposits.
