Kurumbapatti Zoological Park, Wildlife sanctuary in Salem district, Tamil Nadu, India
Kurumbapatti Zoological Park is a zoo located near the Shervaroyan Hills on the outskirts of Salem, in Tamil Nadu, India. The grounds are crossed by natural water channels and shaded by bamboo groves, with separate sections for different groups of animals.
The zoo opened in 1981 as a modest animal museum before gradually growing into a full zoological facility. Over the following decades, the site expanded to accommodate more species and take on a broader role in the region.
The park is a regular destination for school groups from Salem and the surrounding towns, who come to see animals they would not otherwise encounter. Along the paths, visitors can watch keepers going about their daily routines with the animals.
The park is a short drive from Salem city center and can also be reached by public transport. Much of the grounds are open to the sky, so comfortable footwear and sun protection are worth bringing along.
The park runs a rescue and rehabilitation program for wild animals found injured or orphaned in the area around Salem. Once they have recovered, these animals are returned to the wild rather than kept on permanent display.
