Melagiri, Forest reserve in Krishnagiri district, India.
Melagiri is a forest reserve in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, India, covering dry deciduous and semi-evergreen woodlands across hilly terrain. The area sits between the Cauvery River to the north and the Palar River to the south, with the forest cover varying noticeably as the land rises and falls.
The area was formally designated as a reserve forest in 2014 under Indian forest law, giving it legal protection for the first time. Before that, the land had faced decades of pressure from farming, logging, and other uses that had reduced its cover.
The forest serves as a movement corridor for elephants traveling between the Cauvery and Sathyamangalam protected areas, and local communities along its edges have long observed this seasonal passage. Their familiarity with the forest shapes how the land is used and respected in everyday life.
The cooler months from November to February are the best time to visit, as the terrain is drier and easier to move through. During the monsoon season, trails can become slippery and some parts of the forest harder to reach.
The rocky outcrops within the reserve shelter a toad species called Minervarya sahyadris, which is rarely found in dry forest habitats of this kind. The same rocky areas also support plant species that are hard to find elsewhere in the surrounding region.
