Krishnagiri Fort, 16th century hilltop fort in Krishnagiri district, India
Krishnagiri Fort sits on a granite hill with stone walls, watchtowers, and military structures overlooking the Tamil Nadu landscape. The buildings spread across the hilltop and make use of the natural rock formations.
The fort was built during the Vijayanagara Empire and later changed hands between Indian kingdoms and the British East India Company. By 1792 it came under full British control.
The local name Krutthinagiri Kottai connects the fort to the region's identity and heritage. It is part of a network of twelve fortifications called Baramahal that shaped this area.
The fort is reachable by regular bus service from Krishnagiri town, and the best time to visit is between October and March. Wear comfortable shoes since the climb is steep and the ground is uneven.
The fort has an intricate water storage system carved directly into the rocky hill. This engineering marvel reveals the advanced building methods of the Vijayanagara period.
