Rajagiri Fort, Ancient fortification in Viluppuram district, India.

Rajagiri Fort is a hilltop fortification with walls constructed from granite and saffron-colored stone that enclose a large area. The site contains multiple preserved structures, including temples, religious buildings, and water storage systems spread across the terrain.

The fort originated around 1200 AD during the Chola dynasty and later changed hands between the Vijayanagara Empire and various sultanates. These shifts in control left their mark on the structures and layout visible at the site today.

The fort complex contains temples dedicated to Hindu deities and two mosques built in the 18th century, reflecting the religious diversity that existed within its walls. These structures show how different faiths coexisted in this fortified settlement.

The fort is accessible via a path of about one kilometer from the Gingee Market area and has multiple structures to explore on foot. Plan for adequate time as the site is spread out and the terrain involves hills and uneven surfaces.

The fort includes an elephant tank and stone structures with water supply systems, revealing the sophisticated engineering of its water management. These practical features show that the fortification was designed to support both military functions and daily settlement needs.
