Perambalur Buddhas

Perambalur Buddhas are two stone-carved figures about 6 feet tall seated in meditation postures, dressed in traditional robes with coal-black hair rendered in detail. Each statue serves as a focal point for contemplation and spiritual practice in this rural setting.

These statues date to the 11th century and mark one of the rare surviving Buddhist monuments in Tamil Nadu. They stand as evidence of the region's Buddhist heritage, which extends back to the influence of Emperor Asoka.

Local people blend Hindu and Buddhist traditions by decorating the statues with flowers, sacred ash, and garlands, calling them Buddha Samy with deep respect. This mixing reflects how different faiths have coexisted in this region and shaped the spiritual life of its residents.

The two statues are located at different spots, with one easily accessible near a bus stop in the area. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for rural roads when exploring the various locations.
