Brahmapureeswarar Temple, Hindu temple in Thirupattur, Tamil Nadu, India
Brahmapureeswarar is a Hindu temple in Thirupattur, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Shiva and housing a self-formed lingam in the main shrine. The complex spreads across several courtyards with pillared halls, carved towers, and separate rooms for twelve more lingams.
Tradition holds that Brahma established the shrines after losing his fifth head and his power to create. The site was expanded over centuries and supported by different South Indian dynasties.
The temple takes its name from the god Brahma, who is believed to have prayed here, and worshippers come hoping to shape their path through ritual offerings. You often see people in quiet devotion before the shrines, bringing flowers and incense.
The site opens in the morning and late afternoon, with earlier access on Thursdays, and visitors should cover shoulders and knees. It is best to go during morning rituals when fewer people are around and the mood is calmer.
The grounds hold the burial site of Yogi Patanjali, who wrote the foundational texts on yoga. Next to the main shrine stands a small room where Brahma is said to have meditated until he gained release.
