Tropical butterfly conservatory, Trichy

The Tropical Butterfly Conservatory is a park in Srirangam using about 25 acres of the Upper Anaicut forest reserve and features specialized breeding areas along with an artificial lake for temperature regulation. The facility consists of enclosures with varying conditions where different butterfly species thrive in their natural habitats.

The park was established in 2012 by the Tamil Nadu government as a project to preserve butterfly species. This initiative was part of a broader effort to protect pollinators and their habitats in the region.

The Nakshatravanam section displays 27 tree species connected to Indian astrological stars, along with 12 plants representing zodiac signs. Visitors can discover these connections while walking through the gardens themselves.

The grounds have about 1.2 kilometers of walking paths to explore on foot, along with refreshment areas and parking for cars and motorcycles. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and the best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when butterflies are most active.

Enclosed conservatories maintain specific temperatures through air conditioning to create conditions where 39 different butterfly species breed and reproduce. This controlled environment allows rare and delicate species to be preserved that would otherwise be difficult to see in the wild.
