Srirangam, Religious river island in Tiruchirappalli, India.
Srirangam is a river island in Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu, formed between the Kaveri and Kollidam river branches. The island hosts the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, organized by seven concentric walls and several towers.
The temple complex began in ancient times and was expanded over centuries by the Chola, Pandya, and Hoysala dynasties. Later rulers from the Vijayanagara Empire supported the construction of additional structures and gateways.
The temple maintains regular rituals with morning ceremonies starting at 6 AM, afternoon prayers, and evening services following traditional Vaishnavite practices.
Visitors reach the island through Tiruchirappalli, either by plane to the international airport or by train to the city railway station. From there, buses run regularly to the temple complex.
The Rajagopuram tower was completed in 1987 after a four-century pause and reaches a height of around 73 meters (240 feet). This gateway tower marks the main entrance to the temple complex and can be seen from a distance.
